(Daily Caller News Foundation) – President Joe Biden’s administration will release a finalized rule on Friday that expands Title IX protection to include “gender identity,” according to CNN.

Title IX prohibits discrimination based on sex in any public school or university that receives federal funding, and in 2022 the administration unveiled a revised version that would extend the rule to include “gender identity” and “sexual orientation.” The administration’s finalized rule will go into effect on August 1, according to CNN.

“Our nation’s educational institutions should be places where we not only accept differences, but celebrate them – places that root out hate and promote inclusion, not just because it’s the right thing to do, but because our systems and institutions are richer for it,” Education Secretary Miguel Cardona said in a call to reporters, according to CNN.

The rule will not address transgender athletes, despite previous efforts by the administration to include a provision barring schools from prohibiting biological males from competing in women and girls’ sports, according to The Associated Press. The administration is currently working on a separate rule that would prohibit schools from adopting a “one-size-fits-all policy” that prohibits students from competing on the basis of gender identity.

Nearly 25 states have enacted legislation that bans biological men from competing in female divisions.

The White House did not immediately respond to the Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment.
