Two kindergarteners are in critical but stable condition after a shooting at a California Christian school Wednesday, CNN reported.
Authorities say Glenn Litton, 56, targeted the Feather River Adventist School in Oroville, Northern California, for its affiliation with the Seventh-day Adventist Church.
Litton, who had been released from prison weeks ago, was found dead at the scene from what was likely a self-inflicted gunshot wound from a handgun, according to CNN.
The K-8 school serves 35 students.
Roman Mendez, 6, sustained two gunshot wounds and Elias Wolford, 5, was shot in the abdomen, Butte County Sheriff Kory Honea said. Both boys have a āvery long road ahead of them in terms of recovery,ā he said.
Authorities described Litton as homeless and a convicted felon who spent his time between Sacramento and Chico. As a felon, he would have been prohibited from legally possessing a firearm.
Honea said Litton had set up a meeting with the school Wednesday under the pretense he wanted to enroll a family member, using it as a way to access the campus. He also used an ID with a different name when scheduling the meeting.
The shooting took place as children were finishing their noon break.
California Gov. Gavin Newsom called the shooting āheartbreakingā on X
CNN reported there were at least 78 school shootings this year, nearly all at public schools.Ā
