Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.  —1 Peter 5:6–7 (ESV)

1 Peter is written to Christians who face persecution. In that light, today’s text is all the more hopeful! Exaltation is coming even if now, before that ‘proper time’, you are facing adversity. Humble yourselves, Peter says.

Next, we’re told to cast our anxieties on God. Not some of them, but ‘all’ of our anxieties, all of our burdens. For these suffering Christians, you can imagine how heavy those burdens were. Peter also gives the reason we should cast our burdens on God: ‘Because He cares for you.’ Hear that. God cares for you. Let that sink in. God cares for you. God cares for you—you who are reading this.

What burdens are you carrying today, Christian brother or sister? What anxieties do you have today? Cast them—every one—on the God who cares for you. Don’t unnecessarily carry your burdens and let them weigh you down. Maybe there is someone in your life—a family member, a student, a co-worker—who is also weighed down with burdens. Share the message of God’s hope and care with them this week. Praise be to the God who cares for us.
