Remember your leaders, those who spoke to you the word of God. Consider the outcome of their way of life and imitate their faith. Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever. Do not be led away by diverse and strange teachings, for it is good for the heart to be strengthened by grace, not by foods, which have not benefited those devoted to them. —Hebrews 13:7–9 (ESV)

In today’s text, the author instructs us to look at the lives of the faithful saints who have gone before us and taught us the true word of God. Their lives are evidence that the things they taught and lived are eternally true. Not simply true for a season or a time in human history—but true, forever true.

The author encourages us to imitate their faith, because not only is the truth they lived eternal; he points out that the God whom they served, is an unchanging God. In fact, in verse 8 he writes, Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.

Just as we can see the examples of the blessed lives of those who have gone before us, so others should see the blessing of God that is revealed in us. Today, may other people be students who learn what a devoted Christian looks like by watching you. And may they witness the power of God in you in a way the encourages them to imitate the example you set before them.
