The Lord is Unbelievably Working | Morning Routine Daily Devotional for December 21

Look among the nations, and see; wonder and be astounded. For I am doing a work in your days that you would not believe if told. For behold, I am raising up the Chaldeans, that bitter and hasty nation, who march through the breadth of the earth, to seize dwellings not their own. They are dreaded and fearsome; their justice and dignity go forth from themselves. – Habakkuk 1:5-7 ESV

The prophet Habakkuk spoke to God on behalf of the people. The book details three “calls and responses” between the prophet and the Lord with the first detailing Israel’s lament under King Jehoiakim’s rule. Under his kingship, there was violence, injustice, and oppression. Though Habakkuk’s concern is understandable, the Lord assures Habakkuk that He is in control.

Today’s passage details that response from the Lord, as He tells Habakkuk, “I am doing a work in your days that you would not believe if told.” This unbelievable work will begin with a time of judgment against God’s people for their transgression, eventually followed with their salvation and restoration.

As followers of Jesus, it’s important to remember that we must always see the world around us through the lens of faith. We don’t see what the Lord sees, so we can’t comprehend His motives and purposes. Although we can’t see the future, we can have confidence that a good and sovereign God is working in the world. When you don’t understand why you’re in the predicament that you’re in, never forget, God is working. When you’re facing difficult challenges, God is working. When tragedy strikes, God is working. God has a plan that includes us, but it isn’t always apparent to us. Only through the lens of faith can we remember that the Lord hears our prayers and cares for us. He is always working in and through us for His glory and for our good. Take courage in a trustworthy God! He is doing a work that you wouldn’t believe, even if He told you!
