The Centurion’s Faith | Morning Routine Daily Devotional for December 29

And Jesus went with them. When he was not far from the house, the centurion sent friends, saying to him, “Lord, do not trouble yourself, for I am not worthy to have you come under my roof. Therefore I did not presume to come to you. But say the word, and let my servant be healed. For I too am a man set under authority, with soldiers under me: and I say to one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and to another, ‘Come,’ and he comes; and to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.” When Jesus heard these things, he marveled at him, and turning to the crowd that followed him, said, “I tell you, not even in Israel have I found such faith.” And when those who had been sent returned to the house, they found the servant well. – Luke 7:6-10 ESV

In today’s passage, we’re listening to a conversation between Jesus and a Roman centurion. Centurions were commanders of a hundred soldiers in the Roman army; this was a very distinguished position. The situation? The centurion had a highly valued servant who was sick to the point of death. Well, Jesus came into town, and the centurion knew he could do something about it!

When Jesus approached the house, the centurion sent his friends to meet Jesus. The centurion had faith that Jesus could heal his servant with only a word, faith that Jesus didn’t even need to enter the house to heal the servant. Notice Jesus’ response! He “marveled at him” and said to those around him that he hasn’t seen such faith in all of Israel! Unsurprisingly, when the centurion’s messengers arrived back at the house, the servant is healed.

May we have a faith that matches that of the centurion. Pray to the Lord today and ask Him to strengthen your faith. Jesus has the power to move mountains. As needs arise, as obstacles come into view, ask Jesus to act on your behalf for His glory, and ask in faith.
