And above the expanse over their heads there was the likeness of a throne, in appearance like sapphire; and seated above the likeness of a throne was a likeness with a human appearance. And upward from what had the appearance of his waist I saw as it were gleaming metal, like the appearance of fire enclosed all around. And downward from what had the appearance of his waist I saw as it were the appearance of fire, and there was brightness around him. …Such was the appearance of the likeness of the glory of the lord. And when I saw it, I fell on my face, and I heard the voice of one speaking. — Ezekiel 1:26-28 ESV

Ezekiel was a prophet and priest during Israel’s exile in Babylon. The Lord gave Ezekiel many visions throughout his lifetime, some of which were very strange. The strangeness is in part because God was communicating heavenly things in earthly ways. The things described were of another realm—the heavenly realm.

Ezekiel’s first vision recounts the appearance of God in all his glory. The prophet sees a throne that looks as if it’s made of sapphire, great light resembling the rainbow and fire. It’s so awesome that he doesn’t know how to respond. Words fail him. What do you say after something like that! Ezekiel records that he saw the likeness of God in his great, magnificent, overwhelming glory. And how does he respond? Ezekiel bows down in wordless worship.

When is the last time you focused your mind on who God is, conscious of His glory and presence? The truth is that we often forget about these pictures of our great God scattered throughout the Bible. When we talk about the Lord and talk to Him, who do we imagine Him to be? Who do we imagine we are talking to? It is none other than the King of Glory, our Creator. When you get a chance today, take a few minutes and sit in silent reverence of God. Bow down if you feel compelled. Ask Him to reveal His glory and greatness and walk in the confidence that comes from having spent time in the presence of the Lord.
