Love that Gives | Morning Routine Daily Devotional for February 14

I am my beloved’s, and his desire is for me. — Song of Solomon 7:10 ESV

The Song of Solomon contains beautiful poetry describing the love of a bride and groom, Solomon. Some of its scenes are… well… steamy, to put it lightly. It’s been said that Solomon had a lot to sing about!  Right away we should note that God does not shy away from addressing and celebrating romantic impulses and sexuality in Scripture! Love, including romantic love, is a gift from the Lord and is meant to be enjoyed within the guidelines set out in Scripture. As Christians, we must remember not to stay silent on the subject, as if we’re embarrassed or ashamed! 

In today’s passage, the woman is speaking of her beloved, declaring their mutual desire and ‘givenness’. “I am my beloved’s.” She is given to Him. And he is hers. This gets at a quality of love that is universal (not only romantic): Love gives. Love sacrifices. Love is the giving of oneself, one’s time, energy, or attention to another for their good. In the New Testament, we see this principle applied to all relationships—“Greater love has no one than this, that one lay down his life for his friends.” Jesus, of course, sets the ultimate example of sacrificial love. 

On this Valentine’s Day, look for opportunities to demonstrate true Christian love, to your spouse if you’re married, to your family, to your friends, to your students, to your coworkers, and to strangers. Jesus said that the world would identify us as His disciples by our love for one another! (Oh, and if you haven’t got the special someone a card or flowers yet… yea, you’re welcome!)
