My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world. — 1 John 2:1–2 ESV

First John is a letter to dispersed believers in the ancient world. Throughout the letter, John addresses core tenants of the Christian faith, especially about Jesus Christ. John emphasizes what genuine faith looks like—it understands who Jesus is and works itself out in good deeds and brotherly love. John warns multiple times that if someone lacks these things, that person does not truly know God!

In today’s passage, John wants his Christian audience not only to know they are sinners but know they have an advocate. Jesus is our great helper, our intercessor. Christians are called to know their sin and know their Advocate, Jesus. He advocates for us before the Father as the One who died in the place of the guilty—He bore the punishment for the sin of the world. II just love these words… But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous

The Bible tells us to acknowledge our sin—no matter how gross, how stained, how potent it may be. But the Bible also tells us to know Christ as our advocate. Jesus, who died for you, is your advocate with the Father. So, in the freedom of forgiveness, live a life of obedience for Him today.
