Do you see a man skillful in his work? He will stand before kings; he will not stand before obscure men. — Proverbs 22:29 ESV

During the writing of Proverbs, standing before a king meant a person was recognized and acknowledged by the king. A regular subject would be a part of the crowd or would take a knee or bow in the king’s presence. To stand before a king meant something significant.

As believers, our work and how we do our work speaks to those watching us. If we are surrounded by believers in the workplace, we are spiritually, and in the light of eternity, standing before future kings. Those in Christian education have the wonderful blessing to teach future kings and queens by their words and actions! Skillful, caring, and sensitive teachers have influenced countless lives for the kingdom. But, in the most real sense of all, we stand before our King, the Lord Jesus Christ, always. What we do and how we do it does not escape His watchful eye. Work in such a way that you can look at your work as your ministry because it really and truly is your ministry.

Let me ask you, does anyone think of you when they are asked to think about someone skilled at their work? Today, work to become more skilled in whatever the Lord, our King, has for you to do.
