For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. And no creature is hidden from his sight, but all are naked and exposed to the eyes of him to whom we must give account. — Hebrews 4:12-13 ESV

The book of Hebrews was written to a church where many of the members were of Jewish heritage. The letter has rich references to Old Testament promises and practices that are fulfilled through the person and work of Jesus Christ. In Hebrews chapters 3 and 4, the author has been discussing the rest that God promised to give His people. The rest is guaranteed and imminent, though the time of its arrival is uncertain, and so the author emphasizes the supremacy of God’s Word, which is never failing; and is derived from the One who spoke. His Words, which in part are recorded in the Bible, are “living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.” God’s words convict and bring listeners to repentance.

His words are trustworthy because He is trustworthy. The speech of a liar holds no value, but the speech of God, no matter how unbelievable it may sound, is made believable through the nature of His character. This is why reading and putting scripture to memory is an important discipline for Christians. His word is a tool God has given His people to remember His promises and instruction. Whether you’re a parent, teacher, or church leader, rest easy and work confidently, knowing that God’s Word is a spiritual weapon.
