If we confess our sin, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sin and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. — 1 John 1:9 ESV

This morning, we continue with an understanding of sin, only from a New Testament passage.

In the first chapter of John’s first letter, He explains that God is light and has no darkness in Him. He uses this illustration to talk about God’s holiness—that there cannot be any sin where God is. Therefore, as we have fellowship with Him, we are to “walk in the light, as he is in the light” (1:7). To walk in the light doesn’t mean we never sin, but it does mean that we are to be free from a pattern of sin. We don’t live in sin. As John says, we cannot have fellowship with the True Light if we persistently walk in darkness.

So, the question for all of us today is, “When I sense the Holy Spirit is nudging me into the light, how do I respond?” “How do I typically react to my sin? Do I more frequently ignore the Holy Spirit’s conviction, or do I repent before the Lord for my transgressions?” Confession is such an essential part of the process. If we confess our sin, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sin and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness!Â
