Like You, Dad | Morning Routine Daily Devotional for March 30

Their idols are silver and gold, the work of human hands. They have mouths, but do not speak; eyes, but do not see. They have ears, but do not hear; noses, but do not smell. They have hands, but do not feel; feet, but do not walk; and they do not make a sound in their throat. Those who make them become like them; so do all who trust in them. – Psalm 115:4-8 ESV

You have all probably heard the song, The Cat’s in the Cradle. It’s a Grammy Award-winning song written in 1974 about a man reflecting on his life as a father and how his son has grown up to be just like him. The sad fact about this song is that the man realized, too late in life, that he focused on the wrong things. Not only that, his son, who wanted to become like his dad, did indeed become like his dad. 

It is a modern-day reminder that people still focus on or make idols of people or things. Today, with the onslaught and the proliferation of social media, we can talk like, look like, listen to the same podcast as, eat like, think like, workout like, etc., our idols. We idolize and worship wealth or possessions or job security or power.  

We look at, admire, try to become like, idolize, and worship to what end?  

After David rebukes idols and idol worship, he gives us a better way. David tells us to trust in the Lord. Look to the Lord, fear Him, trust in Him, try to love like and act like you are God’s child. That is where the blessings are. Then we can truly say, “Yeah, I want to be like You, Dad. You know I want to be like You!
