What Do You Seek?

Again, the next day, John stood with two of his disciples. And looking at Jesus as He walked, he said, “Behold the Lamb of God!”The two disciples heard him speak, and they followed Jesus. Then Jesus turned, and seeing them following, said to them, “What do you seek?”

They said to Him, “Rabbi” (which is to say, when translated, Teacher), “where are You staying?”

He said to them, “Come and see.” – John 1:35-39 NKJV

Our text today comes from an interesting time in John the Baptist’s ministry. He had been sent to prepare the way for Jesus, but once Jesus showed up, John had only one message left – “Behold the Lamb of God”! In this, John would lose his own disciples. In fact, his job in preparing the way was finished once Jesus arrived.

Our text highlights the idea that John’s eyes were completely fixed on Jesus. Upon hearing the declaration “Behold the Lamb of God”, two of John’s disciples decide to leave and go with Jesus. Now, these two men had been with John and had heard the message of repentance, and the coming Messiah, day in and day out. But upon meeting Jesus they are immediately met with a question: “What do you seek?”

It’s an important question for all of us – what do I seek in coming to Jesus? It’s a pretty loaded question really, because it requires us to honestly determine the motives of why we come to Him. It forces us to consider, “Is it all about me, or is it all about Him?”

May you and I seek God, to reveal our own hearts… to us. And, based upon what we find, may we be humble and genuine enough to repent, that our hearts would be totally given over to His plans and His purposes – that our lives would reflect a sincerity that it’s all about Him!
