Three public school employees in Texas were arrested last week and charged with sexual crimes involving minors and students, Texas Scorecard reports.
Julio Ricardo Trujillo was arrested for an alleged sexual relationship with a 19-year-old student, including having sex on campus at Rivera Early College High School in Brownsville, where Trujillo, 43, teaches criminal justice and coaches the girlsâ basketball team.
Trujillo and the student were caught on surveillance cameras entering a classroom together in April, with the student exiting a short time later. She told authorities they also had sex twice in Trujilloâs car.
His arrest is part of an âongoing investigationâ that includes other staff at Rivera and Hanna Early College High School, Texas Scorecard reported, with social media posts indicating those staff may also be involved in athletics.
The school district confirmed Trujilloâs arrest and said the other staff in question âare either no longer employed by the district or are currently on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigations.â
Trujillo was booked for improper relationship between educator and student â a second-degree felony punishable by two to 20 years in prison â and was held on $150,000 bond.
Coach sends porn to student
In Harlingen, boysâ soccer head coach Joseph Allen Johnson, 31, was arrested after he allegedly sent a pornographic video to a minor.
The Class A misdemeanor is punishable by up to one year in jail, Scorecard reports.
A district spokeswoman referred to Johnson as a âformer employeeâ and said the situation had been reported to authorities, including the Texas Education Agency.
Johnson, whose teaching certificate is under investigation, was booked into the Harlingen City Jail and later released on $7,500 bond.
Indecent exposure arrest
In McKinney, a Dallas suburb, Andrew Paul Hansen, 41, was arrested after he allegedly exposed himself to a child in February.
Hansen, who worked in the districtâs information technology department, had access to all school buildings but was assigned to Wolford Elementary and Evans Middle School, Scorecard reported.
District officials said they âhave no reason to believe that any incidents occurred on McKinney ISD property or during school hours,â and that Hansen is on administrative leave and not allowed on district property during the investigation.
Hansen, who is married, has worked for the district since 2017. He was booked into county jail and released the next day on $50,000 bond.
If convicted of the third-degree felony charge, he faces two to 10 years in prison.
Texas Scorecard maintains an interactive map listing thousands of school employee sexual misconduct arrests in the Lone Star State over the last few years. Texas has more than 5 million public school students and more than 700,000 school district employees, including about 375,000 teachers.
The state recently enacted a $1 billion school choice program set to take effect in the 2026â27 school year â the largest day-one program in the nation. An estimated 100,000 students will receive scholarships in the programâs first year, with more added in subsequent years.
Nationally, 18 states have passed universal school choice, allowing parents to choose the school â public or private â that best suits their childâs needs.
