Texas survey reveals voters support school choice, restrictions on trans sports participation and treatment for minors

A survey of registered voters in Texas reveals strong support for a school choice bill as well as legislation restricting gender treatment for minors and trans sports participation.

The survey, conducted by the Texas Hispanic Policy Foundation, was taken by 1,000 Texas registered voters between May 8 and May 17.

Respondents were asked whether they agreed or opposed school choice legislation as proposed in Senate Bill 8:

“Legislation is under consideration in the Texas Legislature which would use tax dollars to create an educational savings account (ESA) for some Texas K-12 students of up to $8,000 that could be used to pay for tuition at an accredited private school, online schooling or for private tutors.”

The results reveal strong support for school choice across demographics. 

Over half (58%) of respondents support the bill, including 70% of Black voters, 75% of Generation Z, 65% of Millennials, 67% of Independents, and 61% of “Core Urban” voters. 

The survey also asked if the respondents agreed or opposed Senate Bill 14, which would prohibit medical professionals from providing puberty-inhibiting drugs, cross-sex hormones and surgical interventions to children under 18.  

According to the survey, 66% of Texans support the measure to restrict such medical services. 

The survey also asked about Senate Bill 15, which would prohibit Texas public university athletic teams from allowing a student to compete on a gender specific team that wasn’t their biological gender.  

An overwhelming 70% agreed that biological males shouldn’t be allowed to compete with biological females.
