The director of The Chosen unveiled new details about the much-anticipated Season 6 during a livestream, while also announcing release dates for several upcoming projects, including a children’s animated series and a live-action project with Bear Grylls.
Director and creator Dallas Jenkins described Season 6 as “expansive,” adding it will explore far more than Christ’s death.
“This is not just the story of the crucifixion,” Jenkins said. “This is the story of humanity. And one of the things that we do in this … is we portray not only the crucifixion itself, but the need for the crucifixion – the history of humanity that shows why the crucifixion took place and what the crucifixion was in a response to.”
Although a release date for Season 6 has not been set, Jenkins said he expects the first episodes to debut in early fall 2026. The company behind The Chosen, 5&2 Studios, previously announced the Season 6 finale will arrive in theaters March 12, 2027. Season 7 – the final chapter in the popular series – will include the resurrection.
Jenkins described the filming of Season 6 as the “hardest season of our lives,” not only because of the demanding location – Italy was a major undertaking – but also due to the emotional and spiritual weight of portraying the Passion of Christ, especially for believers on set like Jenkins and Jonathan Roumie, who plays Jesus.
Season 6 will debut simultaneously in multiple languages, a first for the series, which has traditionally added new translations only after the English release.
With roughly 90 shooting days, Season 6 marks the longest production schedule in the series’ history.
“I’m confident that this challenge is going to be worth it, because the footage is extraordinary,” Jenkins said.
Meanwhile, Jenkins provided updates on four other projects.
One of those – an animated series titled The Chosen Adventures – is set to premiere on Prime Video Oct. 17, he said. It tells the story of Christ as seen through the eyes of two children, Abby and Joshua. Those two characters were first seen by fans of the live-action series in Season 1, Episode 3.
Season 1 of The Chosen Adventures will include 14 episodes.
“There are some really great lessons that are taught in each episode,” Jenkins said. “And you get to just see the experience of a child – but it’s funny enough and charming enough, and I believe, good enough that parents will enjoy this show as well.”
A second project, the live-action series The Chosen in the Wild with Bear Grylls, will release around spring 2026 and follows the famed survivalist as he leads Jenkins and five cast members into the wilderness. The participants include Luke Dimyan (Judas), Noah James (Andrew), Elizabeth Tabish (Mary Magdalene), Paras Patel (Matthew) and Jonathan Roumie (Jesus). Grylls, himself a Christian, guides the journey.
Jenkins described it as more than simply an adventure show.
“Bear Grylls took us out into the wild, pushed us to the extreme,” Jenkins said. “… He loves the show, and he loves getting to know people, and he really dug deep. And in each of these episodes, there’s things that we talked about that we’ve never talked about publicly before – just really beautiful moments.”
Jenkins said a third project, the live-action limited series Joseph of Egypt, does not yet have a release date but will stream on Prime Video, which is also financing it. Responding to fans’ concerns about the series being funded by a mainstream company, Jenkins said, “We are the ones who are creatively overseeing this project – I am the final say, the final creative say.”
“All these projects also go under our theological review,” he said. “We want to make sure that we are biblically faithful and that we’re not doing anything that contradicts the character of God and the Bible.”
The series will span eight episodes.
“We have gotten to a place where the show has grown so much that other projects are going to be able to be made that you don’t have to finance,” he said. “Prime Video has stepped up and said, ‘We will finance Joseph of Egypt and we will put it on our streaming platform, but you still get to control the content.”
A fourth project, the animated musical David, will land in theaters through a partnership between 5&2 Studios and another company, Slingshot Productions. It does not have a release date.
Finally, Jenkins said Season 5 of The Chosen will debut Sept. 28 on the series’ official app. For now, that season can be streamed only through Prime Video.
