Now out of the ground the Lord God had formed every beast of the field and every bird of the heavens and brought them to the man to see what he would call them. And whatever the man called every living creature, that was its name. The man gave names to all livestock and to the birds of the heavens and to every beast of the field. —Genesis 2:19–20 (ESV)
Scripture’s creation story emphasizes that God created the world and all living creatures. But there was one part of creation that was set apart and given delegated authority: humanity. Mankind is told to subdue and rule over the creation of God. We are His stewards. We are made in God’s image, and as God is creator, we are creative.
In today’s text, we see the story of how God gave Adam the responsibility to name living creatures. God did not tell Adam what to name them; Adam seems to have the creative freedom to name them as he sees fit. But God brought them to Adam. Adam could hardly go wrong if he would simply do the naming!
What responsibilities has the Lord delegated to you? Raising children? Teaching students? Discipling church members? Carry on the work in confidence, not in fear of disappointing the Lord. Make it your task to do your best with the work He brings you. He will equip you. Disappointing the Lord is typically and intentional act, not something done by accident.
