Has public education turned into Public Enemy No. 1?
Actor Kirk Cameron thinks so, anyway.
“It’s time for a Homeschool Awakening,” Cameron writes.
With these words the 51-year-old actor announced in a video on Instagram that he will release a film project on homeschooling in June. The film promises to “explore the ins, outs, and honest answers to homeschooling’s most frequently asked questions.”
“It’s upon us parents to cultivate the hearts, souls, and minds of our children,” his Instagram post explained. “Today’s public school systems are not working for us, they are actively working against us. Public education has become Public Enemy No. 1.”
In the video, Cameron introduces a video trailer, which opens with several clips from recent news coverage in which politicians and news pundits suggest parents should have less say – not more – in what their children are being taught in public schools.
One clip shows the now infamous Virginia gubernatorial debate in which Democratic incumbent Terry McAuliffe exclaimed, “I don’t think parents should be telling schools what to teach.”
Glenn Youngkin went on to win the election, emphasizing respect for, and helping ignite a national wildfire of, parental rights in education.
The trailer also features testimonials from several parents about common misconceptions they held before they started homeschooling, and how their homeschool experience has differed from those misconceptions.
“I always viewed homeschooling as somewhat of a cult,” said one parent. Others viewed homeschooling families as “quiet, reclusive,” “the different people,” or “abnormal in some way.”
“That was before we had kids,” says one couple, “All of the sudden time for school – and is this really what I should be doing? Dropping them off somewhere else?”
Another couple says to prospective homeschooling parents, “You are the perfect person to teach them because you have been teaching your child since day one.”
The video ends with Cameron putting the film into the context of the current cultural moment:
“I think America needs a film like this right now. We need to take back the education of our children. Because whoever controls the textbooks, controls the future. Whoever’s shaping the hearts and minds and souls of our children will determine whether or not we live in a free country.”
The film will be in movie theaters for two days, June 13 and 14.
