The Biden administration is set to counter conservative opposition to sex books in schools by appointing a new book ban czar.
The book czar will be a member of the Education Department Office of Civil Rights, which has expanded the concept of gender by including LGBTQ under Title IX, which previously has always defined gender by biology at birth.
“Across the country, our nation is facing a spike in book bans, and these efforts disproportionately target the LGBTQI+ community as well as communities of color,” the White House said, according to Red State. “These aren’t just attacks on the rights of LGBTQI+ Americans, they are part and parcel of a coordinated attack on our democracy.”
The coordinator’s job will be to train school districts and libraries on how to use federal law and Biden executive orders to evade local laws that prohibit sexual material in schools and libraries, said White House domestic policy adviser Neera Tanden, according to Fox News.
While progressives claim that conservatives are “banning books,” even they acknowledge that such books are still available for sale everywhere, and conservatives are simply removing books from schools and libraries.
For example, PEN America, the progressive 501(c)3 that advocates for freedom of expression, tracks so-called “book bans,” and acknowledges in their list of books that the removals only apply to classroom and school libraries.
“PEN America defines a school book ban as any action taken against a book based on its content and as a result of parent or community challenges, administrative decisions, or in response to direct or threatened action by lawmakers or other governmental officials, that leads to a previously accessible book being either completely removed from availability to students, or where access to a book is restricted or diminished,” said PEN.
PEN argues that librarians and professional educators are the only people who should be able to make decisions about what content is included in libraries and curriculum, even as tax dollars support those officials.
In a video presentation in March, Florida’s Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis targeted the “book ban” narrative by using excerpts from the books that were so obscene that professional broadcasters had to go dark rather than air the presentation.
“UPDATE: Some of the media had to cut their feed when books with graphic content were displayed that were found in K-12 school libraries,” said DeSantis spokesman, Bryan Griffin.
“Federal law prohibits obscene, indecent and profane content from being broadcast on the radio or TV, with punishment including fines and up to two years in jail.
Broadcasters can also lose their license.
The Biden administration is pinning a lot of its hopes on the LGBTQ community to rally to the reelection of the president in 2024, according to political observers.
According to NPR the White House also took other actions on Thursday to bolster support in the gay and transgender community including:
- a community safety program from the Department of Homeland Security to work with LGBTQI+ community centers, clinics and small businesses like restaurants and bars to provide training for bomb threats, active shooters and cyber threats
- an advisory for mental health care providers from Health and Human Services to help provide evidence-based care for transgender youth
- regulations to protect LGBTQI+ kids in foster care and place them in safe and appropriate homes
