President Donald Trump on Thursday launched TrumpRx.gov, a new website aimed at lowering prescription drug prices that he touts as one of the “most transformative healthcare initiatives of all time.”
The White House says the new website will offer historic discounts on many of the country’s most popular and expensive drugs, priced at the lowest rates paid by other developed nations.
The website features drugs made by the first five major drug manufacturers to reach pricing deals with the Trump administration: AstraZeneca, Eli Lilly, EMD Serono, Novo Nordisk and Pfizer.
Speaking at the launch on Thursday, Trump said he thinks it will be the “biggest thing to happen in healthcare” in many decades, and promised Americans they will “save a fortune.” He especially touted the reduction of prices for weight loss drugs and infertility drugs.
The initiative could tap into voters’ affordability concerns ahead of the midterm elections, as recent polling indicates healthcare costs top the list of Americans’ economic worries. Two-thirds of the public rated health care as a top concern in a Kaiser Family Foundation’s poll last week, ranking it as a higher concern than the cost of food, housing, gas and utilities.
“For years, politicians from both parties have promised to bring down prescription drug prices and make healthcare care more affordable, but they all failed,” Trump said. “This launch represents the largest reduction in prescription drug prices in history by many, many times.”
Trump said for years American consumers have been taken advantage of by pharmaceutical companies, paying the “highest drug prices anywhere in the world” and subsidizing drug costs for other countries.
Pharmaceutical companies also have agreed to invest “hundreds of billions of dollars to bring drug manufacturing back to America,” Trump said, as companies such as Eli Lilly have already begun to build new plants across the country.
The result will be “jobs, economic growth, factory openings, and far greater national security,” Trump added.
Dr. Mehmet Oz, administrator of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, said Thursday that no American should buy prescription drugs without first checking on TrumpRx.gov to see if the medication is available at discount prices. The website will help the public no longer suffer affordability issues in healthcare, he said.
“One in three Americans are turned away from the drugstore. They can’t afford the drugs. No more,” he said. “Our most vulnerable are protected.”
