America is on the cusp of a great spiritual awakening, and Kirk Cameron is tired of Christians hitting the snooze button.
In his new book, Born to Be Brave: How to be a Part of America’s Spiritual Comeback, the former Hollywood hotshot turned Christian champion paints a vision for how believers can reform America from the bottom up.
At a time when topics such as abortion and LGBT issues have gained traction, Cameron invites his readers to imagine a world where Christian values once again permeate the culture.
His book asks one central question: “What if the present cultural setback is really a divine setup for a spiritual comeback led by the family of faith?”
Born to Be Brave isn’t a high-minded theological treatise. It’s straightforward, inspiring and easy enough for children to read while still addressing the profound call on every Christian life.
Cameron rejects modern notions of the separation of church and state and dares fellow believers to bring faith into the public sphere, whether it’s welcomed or not.
“Civil government isn’t and never will be religiously neutral,” he writes. “Nature abhors a vacuum, and likewise culture will inevitably follow the lead of one worldview or another.
“Sooner or later, someone’s values will dominate in the public square.”
Instead of censoring themselves, Christians should “pick up our historic vision of being a nation under God and carry that commitment boldly into a future full of unknowns and the presence of God.”
At its core, Born to Be Brave isn’t about politics – elections, politicians, agencies or legislation.
It’s about a revival in the hearts of people, a revival that will last longer than four years because the God who works in human hearts is eternal.
Cameron touches on public education – arguably the biggest battleground for the hearts of the next generation – and devotes a whole chapter to men, encouraging them to embody the brave and biblical warriors who trusted God rather than fearing man.
Once the star of a popular 80s sitcom, Cameron knows a thing or two about putting everything on the line for his faith. But unlike many of today’s celebrities and social influencers, he isn’t interested in social activism.
A true evangelist at heart, his passion for America’s spiritual awakening is about the inner transformation that reforms the individual first, then the family, and last, the community.
Rather than sitting idle and waiting for Jesus’ return, Cameron exhorts his fellow believers to be busy with the business of “heavenizing earth” – even earthly governments.
As Jesus taught his disciples to pray, “Our Father … your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.”
