President Donald Trump signed a spending package Tuesday afternoon that ends the four-day partial government shutdown. The signing happened shortly after the House approved five spending bills Tuesday by a 217-214 vote, with 21 Democrats joining with Republicans to approve the measures.
The legislation extends Department of Homeland Security funding through Feb. 13, setting up the next major point of debate, CBS News reported.
Democrats led a record 43-day shutdown in the fall, but emerged with little to show for it.
Tuesday’s compromise will allow debate about DHS to continue, as Democrats voice opposition to recent immigration enforcement efforts. Some have called for Immigration and Customs Enforcement to be “dismantled” or restricted in its activities.
