Students at one California public high school had to pretend to come out as gay or lesbian for a class assignment last month.
“Stand in a circle. Each of you is now gay or lesbian, and you are about to begin your coming out process. You cannot talk for the rest of this activity,” the Rancho Buena Vista High School freshmen were instructed in the elective seminar taught by a math teacher.
The assignment prompted negative backlash from both students and parents.
James Leon told NBC San Diego that his daughter took a picture of the instructions and was one of several students to walk out of class.
âVery uncomfortable,” Leon told the news station of his daughter’s reaction. “She told me right away when she got home. She said, ‘Dad, you have to hear this.’ She wanted to show me what was going on because she knows I am not for teaching any of that stuff in school.”
When Leon’s daughter returned to class, she received an alternative assignment.
Leon also spoke out against the lesson at a school committee meeting.
âI donât see how this is part of the California curriculum for education,” the father told board members, the Daily Wire reported. “There is nothing that it does other than groom children. Itâs not okay. Itâs disgusting and it should not be allowed. I donât think this assignment should ever be taught to any children. It does not do anything other than groom them. It should not be allowed. Anybody who teaches this should be fired immediately.â
A bus driver also reportedly spoke out against it at the same meeting.
“I am totally disgusted,” the district bus driver said. “I am ashamed I work for the district, and you guys allow this to happen in our schools.”
However, one teacher spoke in favor of the activity at the school committee meeting, adding, “People with no connection to our community or even our state have started to flood RBV social media accounts with additional unfounded accusations and slanderous statements.”
Indeed, many social media users expressed their anger after learning about the school assignment.
âHomeschool your children!â wrote one X user.
âWhen you send your children to government schools, they are learning what the government wants them to learn. Think about that,â wrote another.
