A California school district became embroiled in controversy when parents complained about a transgender teacher instructing 4-year-olds on gender identity.

According to local media, multiple members of the public who spoke during the Cupertino Unified School District’s (CUSD) board meeting on Sept. 26 said the transgender teacher told the class of pre-kindergarteners it was acceptable for boys to wear dresses and had other “inappropriate” materials in the classroom.

The teacher also allegedly showed students a drawing related to pronouns and gender identity.

“Gender identity is not a part of the TK [transitional kindergarten] curriculum,” said Crystal Hamilton, a mother and CUSD employee. “Staff have been informed that our personal and political beliefs are not allowed in the classroom, and that political activism is to take place outside of our work hours.”

Hamilton added that when gender identity is discussed in middle school classes on human growth and development, parents are typically notified ahead of time and allowed to opt out.

“We request clear guidance on the introduction of controversial content [and] transparency regarding what is being taught to our children,” another mother told the board.

However, other CUSD employees sided with the teacher, even calling parents “bigots” for questioning the instruction.

“CUSD must clearly support and protect our LGBTQ+ community,” said Steve Greenfield, another teacher. “Tell this insignificant subset of bigots that CUSD does not support them.”

Sophi Scarnewman, the sister of the transgender teacher, also spoke at the meeting and dismissed parental concerns.

“It’s just a drawing of children with different pronouns next to them,” Scarnewman said. “People are making so much more out of this than it truly is.”

But this isn’t the first example of parents being upset with a California school for pushing transgenderism on young children.

In May, a father spoke out against 5th grade students being required to discuss a transgender book with kindergarteners.

Parental outrage of inappropriate instruction is evident across the country, from California to Minnesota to New York.
