People’s Party of Canada leader Maxime Bernier is urging the country to outlaw late-term abortion after a new undercover video showed a Toronto facility offering abortions far into the third trimester.

His comments came after RightNow, a Canadian pro-life group, released footage showing how easily a woman could obtain the late-term procedure for personal reasons alone.

Bernier posted his reaction Nov. 13 on X. He said Canadians have been misled for years about how often these abortions occur.

“Indeed, as I’ve been saying for years, it’s not true that there are no late-term abortions in Canada, or only a few for serious medical conditions,” he wrote. He added, “It’s time Canada joined the civilized world and banned infanticide.”

His party supports restricting abortion after the first trimester and prohibiting late-term abortions except in rare medical situations, according to LifeSiteNews. No other major party in Canada has adopted a platform offering any legal protection for unborn children. Canada remains one of the only countries in the world with no gestational limits in federal law.

In the video, RightNow co-founder Alissa Golob, 22 weeks pregnant, visited Cabbagetown Women’s Clinic in Toronto and asked about an elective abortion.

Staff told her the clinic performs abortions up to 24 weeks, but she was also informed that “Canada doesn’t have a limit” and that she could find a provider to perform an abortion up to 32 weeks.

Golob was told to bring cash to pay the $2,137 fee because the clinic did not have an ATM. The footage shows a counselor telling her “there is no consciousness” at 25 weeks, refering to the unborn baby. However, medical research shows unborn babies as young as 22 weeks can respond to voices, feel touch and experience pain.

Pro-life groups also warn late-term abortions can result in babies being born alive in horrific conditions.

LifeSiteNews reported 150 babies were born after failed abortions in Canada in 2023 and 2024. Records from earlier years show hundreds more. Critics say this reflects an institutional culture that treats surviving babies as an inconvenience rather than human lives deserving protection.

Campaign Life Coalition estimates over 4 million unborn children have died in Canada since 1969.
