FBI Director Christopher Wray announced his intention to resign by the end of President Joe Biden’s term on Jan. 20.

Wray made the announcement on Wednesday during an FBI town hall meeting, the Associated Press reported.

The decision, according to Wray, was “after weeks of careful thought,” the AP said. However, it follows just days after an interview aired Sunday with President-elect Donald Trump on NBC’s Meet the Press, in which Trump suggested he may fire Wray when he takes office.

“I can’t say I’m thrilled with him,” Trump also said. “He invaded my home.”

Trump was referencing the raid on his Mar-a-Lago residence in a classified documents case he maintains was a politically motivated.

Wray claimed to employees Wednesday his resignation will “avoid dragging the bureau deeper into the fray,” according to the AP.
