The FBI shut down its diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) office quietly in December, one month before President Donald Trump, who opposes DEI, took office.

However, the FBI has not explained why it shut the office down, according to National Review.

“The question is why were they allowed to be focused on DEI in the first place?” Sen. Marsha Blackburn, R-Tennessee, told the New York Post. “The FBI should be focused on catching criminals, not winning participation trophies.”

Blackburn wrote a letter to former FBI director Christopher Wray earlier this month, criticizing the bureau for settling for “lower quality candidates to satisfy DEI mandates.”

“To that end, I am deeply concerned that – under your leadership – the Bureau has prioritized Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion initiatives over its core mission of protecting the American people,” Blackburn wrote in the letter.

Before the FBI shut down its DEI office, its website said it was “committed to cultivating a diverse and inclusive workforce.”

“We believe that differences in thought and belief, in race and religion, in orientation, and in ability contribute to more effective decision making, drive innovation, and enhance the employee experience,” the website said. “We know that a more diverse workforce allows us to connect with and maintain the trust of the American people. We also understand we have work to do. We stand committed, as today’s FBI, to fostering a culture of inclusivity and diversity.”

Former FBI special agent Nicole Parker told Fox News last week that social justice hurt the FBI’s ability to “protect the American people and uphold the Constitution.”

“DEI is a dangerous distraction,” Parker said. “I have no issue in celebrating whatever you would like regarding your heritage or gender or religion. But that should be done on your own time and not with the U.S. taxpayers’ dollars while on official Bureau time.”

President Donald Trump has vowed to rid the executive branch of the federal government of DEI initiatives.

However, Trump criticized the FBI for its quiet DEI office closure, wondering what the Biden administration wanted to hide from him.

“We demand that the FBI preserve and retain all records, documents, and information on the now closing DEI Office—Never should have been opened and, if it was, should have closed long ago,” Trump posted on Truth Social. “Why is it that they’re closing one day before the Inauguration of a new Administration? The reason is, CORRUPTION!”
