I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world. – John 16:33 ESV
When I think about the country of Ukraine and all the suffering and tribulation going on, I want to encourage you all to remember them and pray for them. Pray especially for our brothers and sisters in Christ.
As a father of three daughters, I have given plenty of advice to my girls as they were leaving the house or as I was leaving the house. Whether they were going to a youth group meeting or going to hang out with a girlfriend, or if I was traveling to a speaking engagement or visiting family, etc., there were usually some last words of encouragement or instruction.
I am sure you know what I mean. Whether it is family, friends, church members, missionaries, work colleagues, etc., last words are important, and if it may be a long while before you may see someone again, these last words are meaningful and important.
John records the last few hours that Jesus had with His disciples before He was taken away to be murdered. Chapter 17 is called “The High Priestly Prayer,” and it is Jesus praying for His disciples and all believers. Immediately before the prayer, in chapters 13 – 16, were Jesus’ last words to His beloved group of friends. John 16:33 was the very last words that Jesus wanted them to hear and remember. His words to them and us are:
“I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.”
Take heart, my friends, for our Great High Priest, Jesus Christ, can give us peace in our trouble and tribulation. Whether it is illness or a job situation or a family matter, or even war, Jesus can give peace. He can give us peace because He has indeed overcome the world! He is still on the throne. All is well!
