Hollywood director Rob Reiner and his wife Michele were found dead with stab wounds in their home Sunday, and their son Nick has been arrested, according to multiple reports.
Their bodies were reportedly discovered by their 28-year-old daughter Romy in their Los Angeles home. Police arrived to the scene around 3:40 p.m. Sunday, The New York Times reports.
Los Angeles Police Chief Jim McDonnell told the Times 32-year-old Nick Reiner, the son of Rob and Michele, was “booked for murder” and is being held on $4 million bail. Nick Reiner has previously struggled with drug addiction and periods of homelessness, according to People.
Rob Reiner, 78, was the son of Carl Reiner, creator of The Dick Van Dyke Show, and actress and singer Estelle Reiner. Rob Reiner directed The Princess Bride (1987) and When Harry Met Sally (1989). Rob married actress and producer Michele Singer in 1989, and they had three children together: Jake, Nick and Romy.
Rob Reiner was also known for his political advocacy. In 2012, Reiner supported a campaign for the establishment of same-sex marriage as a constitutional right, according to the Times.
Former Vice President Kamala Harris said she was ” devastated” to hear of the passing of Rob and Michele, whom she called “dear friends.”
Reiner vehemently opposed President Donald Trump and befriended anti-Trump Republicans, according to CNN.
Trump posted about the Reiners after their death, saying, “May they rest in peace,” while also suggesting “TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME” and “paranoia” led to their death.
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Georgia, who has recently fallen out with the president, shared his post on X with a subtle rebuke:
“This is a family tragedy, not about politics or political enemies. Many families deal with a family member with drug addiction and mental health issues. It’s incredibly difficult and should be met with empathy especially when it ends in murder.”
