On that day the Lord their God will save them, as the flock of his people; for like the jewels of a crown they shall shine on his land. For how great is his goodness, and how great his beauty! Grain shall make the young men flourish, and new wine the young women. – Zechariah 9:16-17 ESV

The prophet Zechariah lived during a difficult time for the Israelites. Israel had been taken captive by the Babylonians and lived as their slaves, and the Lord’s temple in Jerusalem had been destroyed. But now, some Israelites were allowed to return to what once was Israel and begin to rebuild it. Under these circumstances, Zechariah delivers today’s passage of hope to the distraught Israelites.

During the difficult times of human history, God has always spoken hope to those who follow Him. In Zechariah’s day, it was of the restoration of Jerusalem. The Lord’s promises are precious and trustworthy and lead Zechariah to encourage the people to keep the faith and praise the Lord.

Despite his circumstances, Zechariah not only trusted the Lord’s promises, but he proclaimed them to others. Zechariah held to the promise of a restored Jerusalem. You and I have God’s promise of the New Jerusalem. So today, despite the circumstances, keep the faith and praise the Lord. God’s plan will be fulfilled. Christ is still on the throne. All is well!
