Doug Emhoff, the husband of former Vice President Kamala Harris, is heading back to the classroom.
He begins his role on Tuesday at the University of Southern California (USC) Gould School of Law – his alma mater – as a distinguished visiting professor, the school announced. Emhoff received his JD there in 1990.
“It is great to be back home in Los Angeles, and I am excited and honored to return to USC Gould, where my legal journey began,” Emhoff said in a statement released by the university. “I look forward to continuing to share my experiences with the next generation and hearing from them in the vibrant academic community at USC.”
While in Washington, Emhoff taught law at Georgetown University and was active in mentoring and professional development for law students. He will continue this type of work in his new role, according to USC.
“As a lawyer, I’ve always believed in speaking out on behalf of the vulnerable, defending fundamental rights, and fighting for justice,” Emhoff said. “I’m excited to instill these values in the next generation of legal professionals.
The university praised the former Second Gentleman’s record and credited him as one of the “renowned leaders at the forefront of legal practice,” according to a release.
Although Emhoff has never held elected office, his public profile has grown in recent years because of his marriage to Harris, who is reportedly considering running for governor in California in 2026. She will announce her decision later this summer. Current Gov. Gavin Newsom is term-limited and cannot seek a third term.
In 2024, Harris became the first Democratic presidential nominee in 20 years to lose the national popular vote.
