The Kansas City Chiefs gave God the glory for their historic victory after punching their ticket to the Super Bowl Sunday.
The Chiefs beat the Buffalo Bills 32-29 in a thrilling AFC Championship game Sunday to become the first team in NFL history to make it to a third straight Super Bowl after winning back-to-back titles.
After the game, superstar quarterback Patrick Mahomes put God first in his postgame interview with CBS Sports’ Tracy Wolfson.
“First off, I want to give all glory to God. Without Him, none of this is possible, and I truly mean that,” he said.
The game itself was another instant classic between the two AFC powerhouses who have met three other times in the playoffs since 2020. Not surprisingly, this year’s matchup was the most-watched AFC Championship game in NFL history, averaging 57.4 million viewers.
In what had been a back-and-forth affair, the Bills tied the game at 29 with a Iittle over six minutes left in regulation. On the ensuing drive, Chiefs placekicker and outspoken Christian Harrison Butker made a field goal to give the Chiefs a three-point lead with 3:33 seconds left in the game.
The Bills’ next drive went just six plays for 17 yards, with the Chiefs’ defense making a huge fourth-down stop to give the Chiefs back the ball with under two minutes left. First downs by Chiefs running backs Isaiah Pacheco and Samaje Perine sealed the deal and earned the Chiefs their fifth trip to the Super Bowl in the last six seasons – along with a chance to become the first team in NFL history to win three straight.
Mahomes was also sure to credit his teammates and the fans after the big win.
“I think I’ve always said it, it’s not about one guy, it’s not about a couple guys,” he said. “It’s about the whole entire team. When we needed the defense to get stops, they got stops. Offense, we made plays. That’s why we’re so special. It’s a team effort, and it’s a team football game. …
“I appreciate Chiefs Kingdom for being out here, being loud and proud. We love you, Chiefs Kingdom.”
Mahomes was also seen with a bracelet he began wearing as an addition to his game uniform this season. The white bracelet with red lettering was reportedly given to Mahomes and other players by team chaplain Marcellus Casey. On one side the bracelet reads “Psalm 121:1-2,” and on the other “Courage to climb.”
Psalm 121:1-2 reads:
“I lift up my eyes to the mountains — where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth.”
Casey has preached this motivational message all season long during team chapel services. He shared a video of Mahomes’ post-game interview on Instagram Monday, while writing about the quarterback’s spiritual walk.
“Pretty simple life. Loves his wife. Loves his kids. Studies God’s word. Prays. Works hard. Lives with humility. Admits mistakes. Supports teammates. Gives glory to God in victory.
“TO GOD BE THE GLORY!!!
“Micah 6:8
“’God has shown you what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.’”
Mahomes wasn’t the only prominent Chief to credit God for the team’s fortunes after the game.
Chiefs Owner and CEO Clark Hunt also glorified God during the presentation of the Lamar Hunt Trophy, the AFC Championship award named after Hunt’s father and the Chiefs’ founder.
“Every one of these is so special, and we’re so excited to get to lift another Lamar Hunt Trophy,” Hunt told Jim Nantz of CBS Sports. “And it’s even more special because we’re getting to do it in our house with the best fans in the National Football League.
“I want to thank the Lord for this blessing and congratulate the Buffalo Bills on a tremendous season. What a game today! Travis, Patrick and their teammates always find a way to get it done. That was true this whole year and it’s a credit to Coach [Andy] Reid and his amazing staff.
“Jim, now we get to do something that’s never been done before. Chiefs Kingdom, we’re headed to New Orleans to make history.”
