Federal agents executed search warrants Wednesday at three locations tied to Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) Superintendent Alberto Carvalho.
The searches covered LAUSD headquarters, his current San Pedro residence and a third residential site in Southwest Ranches, Florida, part of suburban Miami.
James Marshall, an FBI spokesperson in Miami, told the Associated Press (AP) that agents executed a search warrant at a residence in Southwest Ranches, Broward County, on Wednesday morning and later departed the property.
He declined to provide additional details about the operation.
Carvalho previously led Miami-Dade County Public Schools before being hired to head LAUSD.
The searches signal the most serious escalation in federal scrutiny of one of the nation’s most powerful and influential education bureaucrats.
The operation, confirmed by the FBI and the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Central District of California, reflects the seriousness of the ongoing investigation into Carvalho’s leadership and LAUSD’s operations, reported the Los Angeles Times.
Last week, the Trump administration stepped in to intervene in a civil-rights lawsuit against LAUSD over alleged racial discrimination stemming from a district program that directed funding toward schools with smaller white student populations, noted the National Review.
The specific focus of the FBI-U.S. Attorney probe, however, remains sealed by court order.
Agents from the FBI were observed entering and exiting both the downtown LA administrative offices and Carvalho’s home carrying evidence boxes, showed local Fox 11’s news feed.
Law enforcement sources in LA with knowledge of the operation, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said search warrants were being executed at both locations, but declined to elaborate any allegations, said local ABC News 7.
The footage showed a heavy law enforcement presence outside Carvalho’s home, with neighbors and reporters kept at a distance behind police lines.
“Law enforcement is executing a judicially approved search warrant at those locations,” the U.S. Attorney’s Office told ABC. “We have no further comment.”
Neither the school district nor Carvalho’s office has offered any comment.
In addition to the civil case, the district has recently been at odds with the Trump administration over immigration enforcement policies in the Los Angeles area.
Carvalho, who has publicly acknowledged that he entered the United States unlawfully, has criticized Immigration and Customs Enforcement operations as “immoral, unethical, and illegal,” reported the National Review.
LAUSD has also been the scene of widespread student walkouts over deportation operations, with the encouragement of local officials like Carvalho, reported the Los Angeles Times.
At the district’s headquarters, employees were reportedly evacuated from floors where federal agents were operating, though there was no immediate indication of arrests or charges at this stage, said Fox.
Officials from the Mayor’s Office in Los Angeles emphasized that the district operates independently of city governance, reported the AP.
Officials with the Miami-Dade school system did not immediately respond to emails from the AP seeking comment about whether the FBI has contacted them about the Carvalho raid in Florida.
