A leaked document from the Chicago Teachers Union details its bargaining demands, including full abortion coverage, carbon neutral schools, and paid leave for victims of verbal assault on social media.

Those demands – which union boss Stacy Davis Gates admitted would cost taxpayers upwards of $50 billion – are part of contract negotiations for Chicago Public School educators.

The current contract expires on June 30.

Illinois Policy highlighted some of the union’s most egregious demands, including:

  • Give union members salary increases of 9% or more every year until 2028;
  • Require each school, regardless of enrollment, to employ a restorative justice coordinator, a “Climate Champion” and a gender support coordinator and/or LGBT specialist;
  • Provide eight weeks of paid leave for educators acting as gestational surrogates;
  • Provide 100% coverage for fertility treatments, including the storage of embryos, and 100% coverage for “abortion care”;
  • Offer full medical coverage and 3 days paid leave for victims of “assault,” even if the assault is solely verbal, occurs off school grounds or on social media;
  • Provide financial assistance for new teachers to purchase a home;
  • Convert underutilized spaces into dormitories, shower and laundry facilities for unaccompanied youth;
  • Allow public schools buildings to be used as temporary housing for families, requiring the additional hiring of night-time custodial staff and social service providers;
  • Request $2,000 in additional funding for each newcoming student of an asylum-seeking family;
  • Give teachers the freedom to eschew “district mandated curriculum” as long as their lessons “meet the learning objectives based on Common Core State Standards and Next Generation Science Standards, state mandates on Black history, genocide and Holocaust study, Disability Rights Movement, LGBTQ contributions, culturally responsive teacher and learning standards, Reparations Won, CPS on interdisciplinary Latin American studies, TEAACH ACT, Native American history, and antiracist curriculum, etc.”;
  • Prohibit the hiring of school resource officers or other police personnel;
  • Implement a fleet of 100% electric buses;
  • Launch a pilot program to make five schools carbon neutral by 2035;
  • Require “queer competency” training for school staff;
  • Designate a day to help voting-age students register and cast their votes;

The last request is particularly ironic as the district is currently embroiled in a major electioneering controversy.

As the union continues pushing its left-wing agenda, most Chicago students don’t even reach basic competency in core subjects.

According to 2023 test scores, just 26% of students met reading standards. Less than 18% did so in math.
