Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill has filed a lawsuit against Roblox, alleging the online gaming platform enables child predators and has immense amounts of harmful content.
“Due to Roblox’s lack of safety protocols, it endangers the safety of the children of Louisiana,” Murrill said in a statement. “Roblox is overrun with harmful content and child predators because it prioritizes user growth, revenue, and profits over child safety.”
Murrill filed the lawsuit Thursday in the 21st Judicial District Court in Louisiana.
The lawsuit argues Roblox “has and continues to facilitate the distribution of child sexual abuse material and the sexual exploitation of Louisiana’s children,” “knowingly and intentionally fails to implement basic safety controls to protect child users from predators” and “knowingly and intentionally fails to provide notice to parents and child users of its dangers.”
Roblox, launched in 2006, allows users to create and play interactive games called “experiences.”
The company has nearly 82 million daily active users and more than 6.4 million experiences on the platform. Its records show 20% of users are under age 9, another 20% are 9-12, 16% are 13-16 and 44% are 17 or older.
The lawsuit notes Roblox does not require age verification or parental permission during signup, allowing predators to pose as children to bypass any age limits. Once signed up, users can access millions of games, including titles with sexually explicit themes.
The complaint names examples such as “Escape to Epstein Island,” “Diddy Party” and “Public Bathroom Simulator Vibe,” alleging some include “simulated sexual activity such as child gang rape.”
The complaint cites a recent case in Livingston Parish.
Last month, law enforcement executed a search warrant at the home of a man suspected of possessing child sexual abuse material.
“At the time of the arrest, the suspect was actively using the online platform Roblox,” the lawsuit says.
The man allegedly used voice-altering technology to mimic a young female’s voice to lure minors.
“Every parent should be aware of the clear and present danger posed to their children by Roblox so they can prevent the unthinkable from ever happening in their own home,” Murrill said.
The state is seeking to stop Roblox from claiming it has adequate safety features. It is also seeking an unspecified amount of restitution to the state, attorneys’ fees, civil penalties and other damages allowed under law.
