(Daily Caller News Foundation) – About 77% of New Jersey adults say they believe schools should be required to notify parents if their children are transitioning genders, according to a Tuesday poll.

Moreover, approximately 55% of New Jersey adults believe that even if it is not required, educators should still notify parents if their child is transgender, according to the poll by Monmouth University. A New Jersey judge temporarily blocked three school districts on Friday from enforcing policies that alert parents if their child is transitioning genders after Democratic Attorney General Matthew Platkin sued the school systems.

Of state residents, 58% believe that transgender students should use the bathroom on the basis of biological sex rather than gender identity, the poll shows. Around 55% of New Jersey residents believe that schools should provide gender-neutral bathrooms for students to use.

A majority of New Jersey adults, 54%, think students should be separated for sexual education classes on the basis of biological sex rather than gender identity, the poll shows.

Three New Jersey school districts adopted policies in June that would notify parents if their child is transitioning genders. Platkin sued the boards shortly after, alleging that the policies violate New Jersey’s Law Against Discrimination, which mandates that schools treat all students the same regardless of their “gender identity and expression.”

New Jersey’s Department of Education’s Transgender Student Guidance mandates that school districts “accept a student’s asserted gender identity” and says that “parental consent is not required” for the student to begin transitioning at school.

School boards throughout the country are adopting similar policies to those of the New Jersey school boards named in the lawsuit; the Murrieta Valley School Board in California enacted a policy after a 3-2 vote on Aug. 10 that would notify parents if their child is transitioning genders. Democratic California AG Rob Bonta opened an investigation into Chino Unified School District in August after the board adopted a similar policy.

The poll was conducted from Aug. 10 to 14 and surveyed 804 New Jersey adults. The margin of error is 5.4%.

Platkin’s office did not immediately respond to the Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment.
