A biological male playing on a high school girls’ volleyball team violated Florida law, and also played on the girls’ team in middle school.

The 10th grade student at Monarch High School played 33 matches over the past two seasons and was removed from the team in November after district officials were notified by an anonymous source the student’s true sex, according to CBS News.

It was then discovered the same boy played girls sports while attending Creek Middle School during the 2021-22 school year.

Following the November incident, Monarch High School was placed on probation and fined $16,500 for violating Florida’s Fairness in Women’s Sports Act, which prohibits biological males from competing in women’s sports.

Education Commissioner Manny Diaz Jr. praised the action taken by the Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) and emphasized the importance of upholding laws protecting girls’ sports.

“Thanks to Gov. Ron DeSantis, Florida passed legislation to protect girls’ sports and we will not tolerate any school that violates this law,” Diaz Jr. wrote. “We applaud the swift action taken by the FHSAA to ensure there are serious consequences for this illegal behavior.”
