A 28-year-old man was fatally shot Thursday night outside a Seattle Church that was holding services. Police say the shooting appears to have been targeted.
Lebron Givuan died after being shot on the steps of Pursuit Northwest church, which was also involved in a controversial worship service in a park that police shut down in May. City officials criticized the church for holding the event and said its beliefs were “inherently opposed to our city’s values.”
“30 bullets fired at people walking in to our church tonight. a father is dead. something has to change in Seattle,” Pastor Russell Johnson posted on X.
Pastor Amy Wuerch told reporters Givuan had recently become a Christian and joined the church, where he came Thursday to attend the weekly BBQ and young adult service with his wife and child.
The church will remain open and hold services on Sunday. It is providing prayer and support, as well as Uber rides for attendees whose vehicles remain behind police crime scene tape, the local NBC affiliate reported.
Pursuit on Friday announced a $50,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the person or persons responsible for the killing. It also started an online fundraiser for Givuan’s family.
Seattle-based reporter Jonathan Choe interviewed witnesses and published surveillance footage showing one shooter exit a white car and target Givuan, who does not appear in the frame. Givuan’s wife and child can be seen running.
Jonathan Shuttlesworth, a prominent pastor from Pittsburgh who also speaks nationally, blamed the city’s leaders for their anti-Christian rhetoric and called on President Donald Trump to act.
“This is the second violent attack on Christians in Seattle in just weeks. Now we have a martyr on U.S. soil,” he posted on X. “When city leadership – like Mayor Bruce Harrell – stirs hostility toward churches and fails to protect them, it’s no longer just a local failure. It becomes a matter of national concern, demanding a federal response.
“@realDonaldTrump – you’ve always stood with the church. We need your voice,” he wrote.
