Gee Scott, a tight end for the Ohio State Buckeyes, is taking the importance of sharing his Christian faith seriously.
It started in January, Scott said in a recent sermon, when he felt God reveal to him he would be involved in baptizing some of his teammates. But nothing seemed to happen right away.
“What started to creep into my heart was a little bit of discouragement. … Am I not witnessing good enough to my teammates? Am I not evangelizing good enough?” he wondered. “We do a Bible study once a week, am I not able to share the truth good enough?”
But this month, faith became sight for the 5th-year tight end, when Scott had the honor of baptizing teammates Carnell Tate, Dianté Griffin, Brenten “Inky” Jones, Lincoln Kienholz, TC Caffey, Kojo Antwi and Jermaine Matthews Jr.
In a carousel of photos from the event posted to Instagram, Scott shared a Bible verse known to Christians as Jesus’ Great Commission:
“Go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.”
“Amazing doesn’t do justice to describe the powerful outpouring of the Lord’s Spirit on all of the Sons and Daughters who joined us this weekend,” he also wrote of the baptisms. “I am truly encouraged by the faith of my brothers in Christ, who decided publicly, to declare Jesus as their Lord and savior – and be baptized. The Lord Jesus is moving on the hearts of those who call on Him wholeheartedly.”
Scott regularly shares his faith on social media, including multiple Bible verses in his Instagram bio, along with the title “follower of Christ” on X. But the graduate student from Seattle doesn’t just talk the talk.
In May, Scott, along with teammates TreVeyon Henderson and Emeka Egbuka, preached at Upper Arlington (Ohio) High School, sharing their Christian testimonies as part of a 700-person event put together by The Walk Foundation, which provides a platform for “collegiate and professional athletes to share their faith in Jesus Christ to their communities and the world.”
On the football field, the Buckeyes are poised to make a national championship push this season, with ESPN ranking the powerhouse program no. 2 in the nation. And as last year’s starting tight end Cade Stover begins his NFL career, Scott is in prime position to have a breakout year as the starter.
Regardless of how the season goes, however, Scott recognizes his role is bigger than his football position.
“Something’s going on on this football team,” he said his in his sermon. “Christ is working on this football team.”
