One of the NFL’s top quarterbacks had barely taken off his helmet Sunday when he turned a postgame television interview into a testimony of his faith.
Houston’s C.J. Stroud completed 23 of 27 passes for 244 yards and four touchdowns, helping the Texans roll past the host Baltimore Ravens 44-10 and giving his team its second straight win after opening the season with three losses.
Stroud was ready to talk football during a postgame interview on CBS, but not before giving thanks to God.
“We came out, played together, played as one, but God gets the glory – win, loss or draw, whatever it looks like. He’s been amazing to us.
“We’ve been through a lot this year so far, and it created a callus and made us tough. So playing against the tough Ravens defense – I know they’re missing a lot of guys, but they still have a great coaching staff, and I thought we just came out motivated to play, to get a dub.”
Stroud is one of the NFL’s most outspoken Christian quarterbacks, frequently crediting Jesus and even quoting Bible verses during public appearances. He referenced his faith again Sunday at the postgame news conference.
“I’m grateful just to be 24, man, and I’m blessed, man. God’s good,” said Stroud, who had celebrated his birthday two days before. “… I’m just really grateful for the position God’s put me in.”
Stroud electrified the league as a rookie in 2023, shattering records and guiding Houston to its first playoff win in four seasons as he was named Offensive Rookie of the Year. In his second year, he faced the tougher realities of NFL defenses and roster injuries, yet still guided his team back to the postseason.
Houston opened the 2025 season with three close losses, falling to the Los Angeles Rams (14-9), Tampa Bay Buccaneers (20-19) and Jacksonville Jaguars (17-10) before whipping the Tennessee Titans in the fourth week, 26-0.
Prior to Sunday, the Texans had never won in Baltimore.
“We’ve always been close, but in this league, it doesn’t matter when you’re close. You want to see production, you want to see wins,” he said after Sunday’s game.
With two straight victories, Stroud believes the Texans are “hitting our stride.”
“We’re playing complementary football,” he said.
Drafted in 2023 out of Ohio State, Stroud has been bold in his faith during his entire pro career.
“My identity isn’t just quarterback, it isn’t just Houston Texans, it isn’t just football,” he told the Sports Spectrum Podcast in 2024. “First of all, I’m rooted in Christ and who He thinks I am. Second of all, in who my family thinks I am. … My identity is through Christ, so [how] can I serve every day to be more like Him and to help one of those around me?”
Stroud reflected on Christ’s grace with deep gratitude and wonder.
“I’m not perfect. I try to do my best and I’m working on things every day,” he told the Sports Spectrum Podcast. “His grace is so sufficient. His mercy is amazing. We don’t deserve it. But, you know, He died on the cross for our sins. And I’m just really appreciative of that because that holds a lot of weight.”
