A San Diego public school is under fire for allegedly hiring a drag queen activist and encouraging students to legally change their names and pronouns at an event.

Libs of TikTok posted photos from the Logan Memorial Education Campus (LMEC) event featuring a drag performer and pro-LGBT materials.

Students were offered pamphlets with instructions on how to legally change their name and “gender marker” through the California court system, according to the photos.

The pamphlets bore the logo of Uprise Theatre, a social justice group that uses “art and activist lawyering to disrupt systems of oppression and reclaim power with the people.”

It uses art and theatre to “teach topics including domestic violence, immigration, sexual assault, LGBTQ+ rights and hate crimes, 4th and 5th Amendment rights, and gang and conspiracy charges.”

LMEC’s event also featured a performance from a drag queen who appeared to be associated with Diversionary Theatre, a San Diego group whose mission is to “foster and amplify the next generation of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and other marginalized voices by providing the local community with live entertainment.”

Diversionary Theatre gears many of its programs to minors and school-age children. Its community engagement includes:

  • A LGBTQIA+ Teen Playwriting Lab
  • Kid-Versionary, an after-school theatre program for elementary and middle schools
  • Teen-Versionary, which hosts a “queer production”
  • Diversionary Werks!, a theatre class for all ages
  • D-Tours, an LBGTQIA+ show for San Diego public schools
  • Queer Youth Karaoke
  • And a Student Matinee Series of free performances for San Diego public schools

Diversionary’s current show is a reimagining of Thelma and Louise described as a “queer odyssey” in which the main characters “seek out the gay happy ending they’ve always deserved.”

Such LGBT-themed events and the promotion of gender transitions in schools have become controversial nationwide, as numerous parents have accused and even sued their public schools for facilitating their child’s gender transition without parental consent.

The Lion asked the school district for more information about the event, what time and day it took place, and whether it was school sanctioned, but did not hear back by time of publication.
