A previously convicted child pornographer was sentenced to an additional 10 years in prison after a Kansas sex offender treatment center discovered child sexual abuse material in his possession.

According to a press release published Wednesday from the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Kansas, Jacob Navarrette, 34, was convicted six years ago in Oklahoma of crimes related to sexually explicit materials of a child under 12. He was sentenced to over six years in prison, 10 years of supervised release and a $3,000 payment in restitution.

As part of his sentence, Navarrette was required to register as a sex offender and complete a sex offender treatment plan, a program the Department of Justice says aims to reduce the likelihood of re-offense.

He was sent to a transitional center in Wichita to undergo the required therapy and in 2024, a staff member discovered a smuggled cell phone under Navarrette’s mattress. He had been using a messaging app on the phone to communicate with a 17-year-old boy.

Navarrette requested and received explicit photos from the minor and admitted to having sexual conversations with multiple other people, including other children.

“Unfortunately, Navarrette was back to committing child sex abuse crimes before he finished serving time for the offense that landed him in prison in the first place,” U.S. Attorney Ryan Kriegshauser said in the press release.

Navarrette pled guilty to one count of possession of child pornography and was sentenced to 10 years in prison.

“This case is an example of why continued monitoring of sex offenders is crucial to protect our society and our children,” Kriegshauser added.

Last week, another Kansas man was found guilty of a similar crime – transporting child pornography to the U.S. from Mexico – and received an eight-year prison sentence.
