Special Counsel Jack Smith moved Monday to dismiss felony election interference and classified documents cases against President-elect Donald Trump.
The decision was expected and follows a Department of Justice policy against prosecuting sitting presidents, The Associated Press reports.
Trump has publicly maintained that the cases were politically motivated, an effort to keep him from winning the presidency for a second time. However, the Republican candidate won the election in decisive fashion, securing 312 electoral votes and winning the popular vote by a margin of 2.5 million votes.
In his filings, Smith asked a federal judge in Washington to dismiss the indictment against Trump over election interference following the 2020 election and asked an Atlanta appeals court to dismiss a classified documents case against Trump, reported The New York Times.
