Ten honors and an overall “Award of Merit” were earned by The Lion at a journalism contest hosted last week by the Evangelical Press Association, bringing the publication’s award total to more than 20 in three years.
This year’s honors ranged from first- to fifth-place finishes in such categories as “interview article,” “e-newsletter,” “podcast” and “article series.” Hundreds of member publications submit articles, photos, videos and podcasts for the competition.
“The Lion offers a steady and conservative viewpoint to its readership,” wrote one judge, who gave The Lion an “Award of Merit” in its publication category of online news.
Managing Editor Josh Mann scored a first-place finish in the category of “interview article” for a piece highlighting one of the Herzog Foundation’s Teachers of the Year, and Lion Reporter Adam Wittenberg took third in “personality article” for another Teacher of the Year story.

The Lion Week in Review earned third place and fourth place in audio and video podcast, respectively. “This is really close to being a breakout initiative. The production and audio quality are top notch,” wrote one judge about the video podcast. The audio version was also described as “well produced.”
The Lion’s Weekly Digest newsletter also earned a third-place finish, being described as “well-designed.” Each newsletter includes dozens of articles – The Lion publishes around 80 articles a week. “The organization is solid, and works well visually,” wrote the judge.
Executive Editor Michael Ryan’s 10-part series based on his book, YouRule!, won fifth place in “article series.”
Other awards include a third-place finish in “website design,” fourth place in “critical review,” fifth place in “long-form video” and fifth place in “short-form video.”
“These awards are a testament to the great team of editors, writers and media creators at The Lion, as well as the support and vision of the Herzog Foundation,” said Mann. “Less than four years after launching The Lion – and more than 9,000 articles later – we continue to grow and aim high. We’re just getting started.”
