Texas Children’s Hospital has made a sharp reversal since its days of providing sex-change procedures for children.
The hospital is no longer providing “gender-transition” services, has terminated five doctors who once performed gender-altering medical interventions on minors and is opening America’s first-ever Detransition Clinic, according to a press release from Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton.
“I applaud Texas Children’s Hospital for changing course and committing to being a part of the solution by agreeing to form a first-of-its kind Detransition Clinic that will help provide free care to those who have been victimized by twisted, morally bankrupt transgender ideology,” Paxton said in the statement. “Under my watch, I will investigate and bring the full force of the law against any Texas hospital that abuses children with harmful medical interventions to ‘transition’ kids.”
The hospital reached an agreement with the U.S. Department of Justice and Paxton after the DOJ sued the facility for medical fraud. Paxton said the settlement represents “an institutional and fundamental cultural shift away from radical ‘gender’ ideology.”
As part of the settlement, Texas Children’s must pay $10 million for billing Texas Medicaid for illegal “‘gender-transition’ interventions,” often under false diagnosis codes. Additionally, the hospital terminated the five “woke doctors who performed harmful medical interventions on Texans.”
Dr. Kurt Miceli, chief medical officer at Do No Harm, told The Lion the settlement is a “momentous victory for detransitioners and evidence-based medicine alike,” adding that the outcome defends the rights of children.
“The message to all activist doctors is clear: there’s a price to pay for breaking your oath to do no harm,” Miceli said. “Attorneys general and state auditors nationwide should take note of how false diagnosis codes were weaponized to hide these sex-rejecting procedures and secure insurance payments – a tactic detailed in our recent report.”
The report details how medical providers may fraudulently file sex-change treatments as unrelated medical conditions to make insurance claims, as previously reported.
For the first five years of operation, the Detransition Clinic will offer free medical care to any patient who underwent “gender-transition procedures,” in an effort “to reverse the damage caused by ideologically-motivated physicians,” according to the press release.
But much of the harm from such physical interventions is permanent, according to attorney Josh Payne, founding partner at Campbell Miller Payne. The Texas-based law firm seeks “justice nationwide for detransitioners and others who have suffered harm because of medical malpractice, fraud, and other health care-related wrongs,” according to its website.
“We know from our clients’ experiences that the harm inflicted is permanent,” Payne said in a statement to The Lion. “They can’t get their healthy bodies back. It’s laudable that the clinic will provide free care for the first few years, but that won’t be enough. The sad truth is these victims will need specialized care for the rest of their lives, to cope with the damage of lost body parts and the ability to function normally.”
A clinic for detransitioners is a “welcome first step” but is not the final solution, Payne said.
“We encourage the Texas Attorney General and the U.S. Department of Justice to establish a fund for victims, to defray the costs of lifelong care and compensate them directly for their injuries,” he said.
