Following the arrest of a Texas high school teacher accused of involvement in a prostitution ring targeting students, the Klein Independent School District (ISD) is trying to rebuild public trust.
Kedria Grigsby, a former cosmetology teacher in the district, was arrested last month inside her classroom and charged with three counts of compelling prostitution of minors and three counts of trafficking a child.
Grigsby’s son, Roger Magee, was arrested and similarly charged in November 2022, after a runaway teen told Harris County Sheriff’s Office deputies she was being trafficked for sex at a nearby hotel, according to ABC13.
But further investigation into that crime revealed Grigsby was helping her son run the enterprise.
A 13-page search warrant revealed Grigsby recruited as many as eight girls from her job at Klein Cain High School.
Following the arrest, the district released a statement expressing “disgust.”
“Klein ISD is disgusted by recent events that have impacted the trust the public has in us,” the statement reads. “We are addressing these issues head-on and welcome ongoing dialogue with our parents and community members as we work to regain any trust that has been lost.”
The district maintains it had no prior knowledge of Grigsby’s alleged criminal activities before her arrest, and promised she would not return to the district.
In response to the incident, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott condemned the teacher and advocated for school choice.
“What some of our educators are doing is criminal and disgusting,” Gov. Abbott said, according to Houston Public Media. “No child should be compelled by the state to be in a school like this. And yet, current law doesn’t allow the choice to go elsewhere. I’m working to elect state representatives who will change that.”
Dr. Jenny McGown, Klein ISD Superintendent, and Chief Marlon Runnels, Klein Police Department, issued a joint statement condemning Grigsby’s actions.
