An honor student and football team captain is dead after being stabbed by another student at a track meet near Dallas.

Austin Metcalf, 17, was stabbed in the heart during an altercation with another student Wednesday, Metcalf’s father, Jeff, told the media.

At a track meet in Frisco, Texas, Metcalf reportedly told Karmelo Anthony, 17, he was in the wrong spot and asked him to move. An altercation ensued and Anthony pulled out a knife and stabbed Metcalf. Anthony has been charged with first-degree murder.

The two boys did not know each other. Anthony is a student at Frisco’s Centennial High School, the Dallas Morning News reported, and Metcalf was a junior at Memorial High School in Frisco.

Metcalf’s identical twin brother, Hunter, witnessed the stabbing and tried to intervene, their father told NBC 5.

“His brother was holding on to him, trying to make it stop bleeding, and he died in his brother’s arms,” Metcalf said. “I rushed up there and I saw him on the gurney and I could tell – they said he wasn’t breathing.

“I could see all the blood, and I saw where the wound was, and I was very concerned, so I had to find his brother, and we rushed to the hospital. And we prayed, and it’s God’s plan, I don’t understand it, but they weren’t able to save him. This is murder.”

The father said his son had a bright future, including a 4.0 GPA and plans to go to college. He was a two-sport athlete at Memorial.

“He was on the right track,” Jeff Metcalf said. “He was loved by many. He was a leader.”

He also questioned how Anthony could have become so violent so quickly.

“I’m not trying to judge, but what kind of parents did this child have? What was he taught? He brought a knife to a track meet and he murdered my son by stabbing him in the heart. The guy was in the wrong place and they asked him to move and he bowed up. This is murder,” Jeff Metcalf said.

Yet even in tragedy, the father affirmed his faith in God.

“You know what, I already forgive this person. Already. God takes care of things. God is going to take care of me. God is going to take care of my family.”

A private vigil was held Wednesday at Hope Fellowship Church in Frisco, where Austin Metcalf was a member, CBS 10 reported

The family has started a GoFundMe page to help cover funeral arrangements and provide counseling for his brother. More than $85,000 has been raised, exceeding the initial $75,000 goal.

Frisco police arrested and charged Anthony in connection with Metcalf’s murder. His bond had not yet been set and it was not clear if he had obtained an attorney.

“The Frisco Police Department grieves with all those affected by this devastating loss and extends its deepest condolences to the victim’s family, students, and staff who are experiencing unimaginable pain,” the department said Wednesday. “The department is collaborating with the Frisco Independent School District and will continue to provide any support they need during this incredibly difficult time.”

Two days before the stabbing, Austin Metcalf posted on X, “Faith that God got me and my work will pay off.”

He also posted about receiving invitations to attend football camps at schools, including Sam Houston, East Texas A & M and Drake University.

Hunter Metcalf spoke about the incident, describing how his brother had asked Anthony to leave their tent only to be told “make me.”

“It was really senseless. I don’t know why a person would do that to someone just over that little argument,” Austin said, describing his brother as “a man of the family.

“He did everything for our family. He was a strong man. He was a strong kid.”
