Thus the Lord gave to Israel all the land that he swore to give to their fathers. And they took possession of it, and they settled there. And the Lord gave them rest on every side just as he had sworn to their fathers. Not one of all their enemies had withstood them, for the Lord had given all their enemies into their hands. Not one word of all the good promises that the Lord had made to the house of Israel had failed; all came to pass. – Joshua 21:43-45 ESV
The book of Joshua details the story of Joshua’s leadership over the nation of Israel when they entered the promised land, conquering the occupied territory. The land was first promised to Abraham in Genesis 15 where God said in verse 7, “To your offspring I will give this land.” This was hundreds of years before Joshua was born.
The Lord fulfilled His promise to Abraham, bringing his descendants to the once occupied Canaanite land, and Joshua, Israel’s leader, gives the Lord the glory, saying “the Lord had given all their enemies into their hands.” Israel didn’t drive the inhabitants out of the land; God did. God fulfilled His promises. This may seem cliché, but recognizing God’s faithfulness to His promises helps us give the glory where it is due. Joshua doesn’t seek praise. Israel’s army doesn’t get the credit. To the Lord alone be all glory, honor, and praise!
The Lord’s words are trustworthy and true. They are worthy of our notice and attention. We are all prone to experiencing dry spells and being distracted from the Lord or neglecting our relationship with Him. However, let the Lord’s faithfulness in this passage be an encouragement and reminder today: The Lord is faithful to fulfill His promises to you. Trust Him today and proclaim His faithfulness to those around you. We can all rest easy knowing we have a faithful and trustworthy God. So, rest assured, His word will come to pass. He is still on the throne. All is well.
