Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz recently said he has no interest in running for president in 2028.
Walz told the South Dakota Standard last week he would “do whatever it takes to get someone elected,” but added, “I’m not interested.” When asked if anything could change his mind about a potential White House bid, he replied, “No.”
The comments come amid ongoing speculation about the 2028 Democratic field.
Walz was the Democratic nominee for vice president in 2024, running alongside former Vice President Kamala Harris in a ticket that decisively lost to Donald Trump. Trump carried all seven swing states in the election.
The oddsmaker Kalshi mocked Walz in a post following the revelation he won’t run for president.
“JUST IN: Tim Walz announces he is not running for President in 2028,” it posted on X. “His odds move from 0% to 0%.”
Meanwhile, Harris is reportedly considering a run for governor in California next year or another presidential campaign in 2028.
Harris will reportedly announce whether she’ll run for governor later this summer.
In a separate interview published by the Black Hills Pioneer last week, Walz said he is still weighing whether he will seek a third term as governor of Minnesota in 2026. Minnesota has no term limits for governor.
Walz has expressed concern about the Democratic Party’s future in other recent interviews.
In April, he said he feels “very pessimistic” about Democrats’ chances of retaking the U.S. Senate in the 2026 midterm elections. Walz also claimed his party hasn’t embraced diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) initiatives enough.
“We’ve been talking about this for years as a country of immigrants, and we let them define the issue on immigration. We let them define the issue on DEI, and we let them define what woke is,” Walz said in March.
With Walz on the presidential ticket in 2024, Democrats lost the national popular vote for the first time in 20 years.
